Next to Normal Opens This Week!

November 11, 2013

Midvale Main Street Theatre is remounting their acclaimed production of Next To Normal.

It’s a musical about a next to normal kind of family. With a twist.

And isn’t that just how it goes?

Not familiar with the show? Ben Brantley wrote this about it in the New York Times back in 2009:

No show on Broadway right now makes as direct a grab for the heart — or wrings it as thoroughly — as “Next to Normal” does. This brave, breathtaking musical focuses squarely on the pain that cripples the members of a suburban family, and never for a minute does it let you escape the anguish at the core of their lives. “Next to Normal” does not, in other words, qualify as your standard feel-good musical. Instead this portrait of a manic-depressive mother and the people she loves and damages is something much more: a feel-everything musical, which asks you, with operatic force, to discover the liberation in knowing where it hurts.

Be The Bard: A Midsummer Night’s Dream–A Fun Twist On A Beloved Shakespearean Classic!

August 28, 2012

Salt Lake City, UT – Be the Bard: A Midsummer Night’s Dream is making its debut at the Midvale Main Street Theatre September 13-22. This well-known Shakespearean comedy portrays the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors, who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set.

Be the Bard: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, conceived by A-Muses co-producer, David Hanson, turns this familiar comedy on its head by inviting a few volunteers from the audience during each performance to be part of the cast in some select roles. The audience member is handed a script or cue cards and a basic costume, and then joins the actors in this hilarious, zany romp. “I was inspired by my research of Shakespearean audiences in conceiving this production,” Hanson says. “In Shakespeare’s time, audiences were quite participative during a performance. Because his work is so well-known, I thought it would be fun to involve audience members as cast members. No two shows will be the same, and each one offers something fun for everyone. I look forward to bringing more of these types of comedies in this same fashion to local audiences in the future.”

Mike Brown directs and this production with Elise Hanson as assistant director. The cast includes Travis Hyer (Thesus), Julie Benedict (Hippolyta), Rusty Bringhurst (Egeus & ), Kathryn Wilkins (Hermia), Kati Paul (Helena), Ryan Honeycutt (Lysander), Sean Keene (Demetrius), Jeremy Jonsson (Oberon), Michelle Hall (Titania), Eve Speer (Puck), Timothy Schonburg (Peter Quince), Rusty Bringhurst (Nick Bottom), Bryce Kamryn (Francis Flute), and a variety of audience members in several roles.

A Jump Into The Future!

June 23, 2012

Midvale Main Street Theatre is constantly growing and pushing the bounds of what they’ve done before and redefining their own future.

At the beginning of the year, we opened with an amazing production of To Kill A Mockingbird that celebrated the anniversary of this profound story about community and integrity.

We followed that up with the community theatre PREMIERE of Next to Normal-– a story about family, loss, and acceptance.

The cast of On Golden Pond made audiences laugh and cry as they watched a timeless love story.

And now, we bring you RENT–Jonathan Larsen’s musical ode to living life well, even if you can’t pay your rent.

What do we think about the year so far? I think this picture of Angel from the cast of RENT articulates it best:

From L to R: Aleksndr Arteaga as Collins, Frank Castro as Angel, Daniel Silva as Roger, and Mike Howell as Mark rehearsing RENT. Check out the red heels!

RENT opens July 19th and plays Th, Fr, Sat thru August 4th.

Showtime is 7pm with a 2pm matinee every Saturday.

Tickets are only $15.

Big Summer Announcements at the Midvale Main Street Theatre!

July 5, 2011

It is Summertime in Utah and we have got some outstanding productions and opportunities coming up for you. First off, our regular group of Quick Wits are continuing their Friday and Saturday night shows at 10:00pm. They are always funny and worth your time…but there’s more! Jason and Russ are going head-to-head (or rather beard to head) in an Ultimate Improv Showdown slated for August. The winner gets amazing bragging rights, the loser has to shave! Yep, the beard or the head depending on who wins!

This month, Around the Globe Theatre Company presents William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” directed by Beth Bruner. The Tempest will run on various dates from July 15-30 of 2011. We are both eager and pleased at the work this company is doing in bringing these great works to life.

August brings us Titus Productions under the Direction of Jake Andersen with Peter Pan. You may have seen their Rock Opera of Alice in Wonderland at the Midvale Main Street Theatre last Summer. I’m confident that this will prove to be every bit as delightful.

Last, but certainly not least, we are announcing auditions for Sweeney Todd. They will be held August 23rd at the Midvale Main Street Theatre at 7:30 pm. We invite you to go to our main Midvale Main Street Theatre website for more information on any of the above shows or auditions.

Have a safe and happy summer!

Thank you for making Hairspray a Huge Success!

January 28, 2011

Wow, what an incredible run this has been!  The Cast and Crew is exceptional, the Reviews have been great, and the audiences have had outrageous amounts of fun! Thank you all for making this run such a success. We are experiencing sell-out crowds and standing ovations as well as audiences who meet the cast after the show collecting autographs and hearts along the way!

Just look at what theatre reviewers have had to say: Utah Theatre Bloggers Association and Backstage Utah! We so appreciate your kind words as well as your advice on where and how to tweak a few things for the future. We hope you will come back again and again to enjoy our performances.

To our amazing cast, we are down to 3 performances…(one tonight and two tomorrow). It comes with a certain amount of sadness to see this magnificent event end. Having each and every one of you in your exact roll(s) has been nothing less than spectacular. I am so proud to include every one of you as members of my extended family. You are amazing, every one of you, and I hope to see you all again in rolls at the Midvale Main Street Theatre.

Now, let’s go take this show out with Sizzling Style!

Love and Gratitude to each and every one of you who has worked on, starred in, and supported this production.

Tammy Ross, Director
